How to make traditional English Pancakes

Pancakes are often linked with 'Pancake day' or 'Shrove Tuesday'; the day before the start of Lent in the Christian calendar. At one time, pancakes were eaten to use up milk and eggs that were not eaten during this period. Now many people enjoy them, at any time. Over the years, traditions such as pancake-tossing and pancake races developed.

Making and cooking it
1. Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl until all the flour has fallen through. Then add the salt
2. Make a hole in the middle of the flour, break the egg and let it fall into the hole. Make sure the shell of the egg does NOT go in as well
3. Add a tablespoon of oil and two tablespoons of milk. Mix it all together, slowly adding the rest of the milk
4. Keep mixing until the batter is smooth
5. Heat a frying pan on a medium heat for about a minute, then put two tablespoons of oil into the bottom of the frying pan. Swirl it over the bottom by moving the pan carefully from side to side
6. Add three or four tablespoons of batter to the pan. Swirl the batter carefully over the bottom of the pan. The batter should sizzle
7. Loosen the edges of the pancake all the way round with a spatula and then slide the spatula underneath the pancake. Flip the pancake over with the spatula
8. Cook the pancake for half a minute more. Once the pancake is cooked slide it onto a plate. It is then ready for you to add any topping you wish, for example
• Lemon juice
• Sugar
• Syrup

If you want to try tossing your pancake, MAKE SURE IT IS REMOVED FROM THE HEAT AND THE COOKING OIL HAS COOLED FIRST. And please get permission from your parents or teacher, as this can be messy
