A 1970's Party

Children's parties held at home or in a local hall became popular in the 1970's. Convenience foods like sliced bread, ready made biscuits, cakes, fruit squash, jelly and Angel Delight made creating party food quick and simple. Newly available food processors meant that cakes could be prepared rapidly, so baking cakes and biscuits was much faster.

Vanilla ice cream could be bought from shops and stored in the freezer section of the fridge at home. For many, ice cream was still a rare treat. Party food was colourful and fun, brightly coloured plastic plates and cups had come onto the market, so it was possible to serve the party food without using glass or china.

Traditional games like pass the parcel, musical bumps and musical statues were popular. Music was played on a record player using albums or singles. You had to be careful not to dance too close or the record player would often skip a track or two.
