The 1st of May, known as May Day or Garland Day, is the traditional day for celebrating the arrival of Spring. All the maidens of the village would dance around the Maypole and the loveliest was chosen to be the May Queen.
It used to be the custom to bake Maids of Honour for tea on May Day.
