Ham and Pea Pasta

Ingredients
  • 200g (8oz) Pasta ( Any kind)
  • 25g (1oz) Butter
  • 3 x 15ml spoons (tablespoons) Plain flour
  • Roughly 450ml (¾ pint) Milk
  • 50g (2oz) Frozen peas (optional)
  • 50g (2oz)Sweetcorn (optional)
  • 2 slices Chopped ham (optional)
  • 50g (2oz) Chopped mushrooms
  • Several generous pinches Salt

  1. Heat a pot of salted water. Once it is boiling add the pasta (you may wish to do this later if your pasta takes less than 10 minutes to cook)
  2. Now make your rue-don't panic its really easy- just keep a whisk handy! Put the butter and flour in the pan on medium heat. Stir it, allowing it to melt and form a thick paste
  3. Add about 100ml of milk and stir with a large wooden spoon, using the back of it to break up the lumps
  4. Once all the milk has been absorbed add another 100ml of milk and stir. If, at this point, it is looking lumpy use your whisk to smooth it out
  5. Add the frozen peas, sweetcorn, ham and mushrooms
  6. Continue to add the milk until you feel you like the look of the carbonara's consistency (not too thick but not too runny)
  7. Take your sauce off the heat
  8. Drain the water off your cooked pasta and pour it back into its pot
  9. Add the sauce to the pasta and mix
  10. Serve up!

Exactly the recipe I am looking for but I don't understand the recipe. I have always been so terrible with math. Wish the recipe was easier to understand so I could try to make it sometime. My boyfriend's mom made this one day and it was so good. One way to get me to eat peas. I am not very fond of peas but this way was so good. Thank you to who ever can help.
I was wondering too if you could use chicken instead of ham? You could use chicken, you will either need to cook this separately or add cold, cooked chicken but do be careful when re-heating meat as it should be hot all through. Perhaps the recipe looks a bit confusing because you have old and new measurements. Try using only one set and if this still seems tricky, use a small bag of pasta (about 200g), a heaped handful of mushrooms, sweetcorn and peas (about 2oz) and for the white sauce 3 heaped tablespoons of plain flour, a dessertspoon of butter (about 1oz), most of a pint of milk.
