This is a vegan recipe
It is impossible to be sure when the first porridge dish occurred. There are no prehistoric recipes and dishes have been constructed using available techniques and ingredients.
Much pre-historic food was collected, eg seeds, berries, roots and leaves. These were highly seasonal and regional. However, as people learned how to make pots, liquids could be boiled over fires, so that porridges, stews and soups could be made much more easily.
- 575 ml (1pint) water
- a pinch of salt
- 50 gm oatmeal
- a little milk and honey (optional)
Making and cooking it
- Bring the water to the boil and add the salt
- Gradually sprinkle in the oatmeal, stirring well
- Boil gently for 20-30 minutes depending on how coarse the oatmeal is
- Serve hot. You may wish to add a little milk and honey
