Postwar / Modern
The post-war years saw the 'Cold War' and fear of nuclear conflict. In Britain a social revolution occurred. The advent of the National Health Service, compulsory free schooling to age 14 (later 16) and expanded university attendance, greatly improved health and educational opportunities. The pill and the emergence of a strong youth culture saw the shedding of old standards of morality and behaviour. Labour-saving devices transformed people's domestic and working lives. TVs, cars and foreign holidays all became common. The period also saw the development of the EU and a growing awareness of global poverty. New problems were also emerging – the energy crisis, AIDS and terrorism would all soon become headline news.
