Romano-British
Roman settlement in Britain began after AD 43. The conquest of what is now England took almost forty years. In the conquered areas, the Romans built towns, complete with forums, temples, law-courts, bath-houses, amphitheatres and aqueducts, well-constructed roads that crossed the country and elegant villas complete with central-heating. British chiefs became toga-clad Roman gentlemen, and soldiers and merchants from all over the empire came and settled here. Then, after more than three hundred years, the Roman army was recalled to defend provinces nearer to Rome, leaving the Romano-British population defenceless against invaders. Towns and roads soon fell into disrepair, and the villas were abandoned. The Roman way of life vanished from our shores.
