These are similar to casserole dishes, consisting of a wide dish that provides space to cook a roast (chicken, beef, or pork). They can have handles, and may have a cover. Braising pans can be ceramic or metal. Roasters are usually made of heavy gauge metal so that they may be used safely on a cooktop following roasting in an oven. They are usually oblong or oval.
